Background

I have never been quite sure whether I journey out seeking weird, funny situations or whether they just seem to find me.

When I had written only a few chapters, one of my son’s favorite teachers and someone I had come to know through various school events, was diagnosed with cancer.  Barbara is someone who loves to laugh and loves to help children learn and develop. Obviously she was devastated.  Once she had begun treatment, I decided to send her one chapter to try and cheer her up even for a few minutes.  She loved the chapter I sent and asked for me to send some more weekly.

Since I only had a few written, she had pretty much tapped me out quickly and she still had a long way to go in her treatment.  I committed myself to writing a chapter every week---not an easy task if you’ve ever tried writing a book while juggling a full-time job and a full-time life with a wife and two young boys.

By waking up early in the mornings or writing once everyone had gone to bed, I stuck to my commitment and sent a chapter to Barbara every week.  She said she would laugh hysterically reading them over and over again, and always looked forward to the next chapter.

By the time I had sent the last one, six months had passed since she had begun treatment.  She was feeling much better, and fortunately the cancer was in remission and has been for over a year now.

They say laughter is the best medicine.  While it doesn’t cure cancer, Barbara told me that it kept her spirits higher and that she was able to fight just a little bit harder.

Knowing that someone could feel better through some of my craziness captured in print made me feel great!
